Awesome Apartments in Albany

Students are enjoying a brand new housing option in Albany this school year. The University Heights College Suites, an apartment-style student residence on the edge of the Albany campus, opened its doors this August to students of Sage and its neighbors, Albany College of Pharmacy, Albany Law School, and Albany Medical College.

This year, about 400 students moved into the College Suites apartments, and by all accounts, students are thrilled with the living arrangements. The two- and four-bedroom apartments all feature private bedrooms with built-in study centers and high-speed Internet access, fully furnished living rooms with cable television service, and kitchens equipped with appliances such as refrigerators and even dishwashers.

"The living arrangements definitely foster a more independent student," says Jennifer Gould, assistant director of residence life for Sage, and a College Suites resident herself. "The students love having their own kitchens. One student cooks for his friends nearly every day."

Some students still prefer to eat at the Kahl Campus Center at Sage between classes, and visit their friends in the Albany campus residence hall: both are just a short stroll away. "The location of University Heights College Suites is perfect. It gives students the independent, off-campus experience without the inconvenience," Gould says. "And they get the benefit of still having resident advisors (RAs) who are really involved. The five RAs are always there to help students, and put on programs and activities that students can do together. It creates a great sense of community." Programs this fall have included a Fall Fest, tie-die workshop, and movie nights.

Located at the heart of the thriving University Heights campus, College Suites brings together Sage, pharmacy, law, and medical students in their own wings of the same complex. "Sage students find it a unique experience to share a residence building with students of other colleges," Gould says. "They exchange different perspectives, and expand their circle of friends. We are looking forward to developing programming in collaboration with the other colleges."

University Heights College Suites is intended for second-year students and beyond, including graduate students (first-year students are encouraged to live in the residence hall on campus). College Suites has 94 four-bedroom and 26 two-bedroom units, which are expected to fill rapidly for next year. In addition to a 24-hour public safety presence, College Suites has an on-site manager, Danielle Uccellini-Roadcap, who represents the property management company United Realty Management Corp. "We anticipate more involvement with the surrounding colleges," she says. "Our goal is to become an important part of students’ lives – on and off campus."
